Journey FAQs

Question: What is journeying?

A "journey" is a spiritual trip via an altered state not unlike daydreaming—you’re in your body but elsewhere—where you can connect with other worlds, spirit and receive guidance, healing and messages; journeying is often facilitated through drumming or rattling.

Question: Who should journey?

Anyone. Everyone. No special lineage or experience needed. Only an open mind and heart.

While this practice is also used by shamans and medicine people for healing and ceremonies, this intro will only speak to the practice as it relates to your own personal journey, and provides you the pathway forward, ethically and responsibly. It does not qualify you to teach others or hold ceremony. Thank you.

Question: Why should I learn to journey?

Journeying is a profound ancient practice that brings you into the body and into your own medicine for healing, community and connection. It’s a technique that teaches and supports you, especially in daily life and challenging times. And it was something our ancestors, who lived more simply and connected to nature, would have used when spiritual wasn't political or divisive. A great gift for you or loved ones in navigating life's ups and downs, busy seasons, everyday situations and your own healing path.

Question: What will I learn in this intro workshop?

This is an experiential workshop. In it, you'll learn what is journeying, how spirits communicate, common experiences, the basics—how to set your intent and protocol—about the three worlds (upper, middle and lower) and how to journey and connect with spirit. We will journey as a group and share in circle.

Question: Why learn how to journey with a teacher? And who are the teachers?

It's important to learn journeying from a trained practitioner who is versed not only in the practice but the ethics of the technique. Intent and protocol are important. Also, we're not just facilitators but available after the workshop for questions. Guidance/mentorship is vital in this learning.

About the teachers —

Anastasia Koutalianos is a trained shamanic practitioner and teacher, Reiki master teacher, medicine-maker and writer. She is of Greek, Macedonian and Asia-Minor (now Turkey) descent and is currently writing a family memoir on intergenerational trauma across her maternal female lineage.

Toni Nicholas is an Indigenous cultural carrier, trained shamanic practitioner and teacher of the Mi’kMaq Nation in Nova Scotia and is the founder of Holding Circle Indigenous Healing; she is passionate about bringing traditional and cultural knowledge back to the Indigenous People.

Question: What do I need to bring to the workshop? And how do I prepare beforehand?

We will have some yoga chairs but you're welcome to bring your own mat or chair too. You'll need a blindfold/eye mask and a journal/notebook to capture what comes up for you. Water and a sweet treat will be provided; please bring your own thermos or cup. Dress comfortably. Bring a blanket and your protective gear should you want to. Please refrain from alcohol and recreational drugs at least 24 hours before we meet.
